January Coach Spotlight: Gregory O'Neill

This year, we’re excited to launch our Coach Spotlight series, highlighting one amazing coach from around the world each month. These interviews showcase their unique stories and the human connection that makes coaching a powerful tool for growth.

In an AI-driven world, coaching reminds us of what sets humans apart: the ability to connect, empathize, and build trust.

"Artificial intelligence can bring efficiency, but only human intelligence can bring empathy." Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft

AI is a valuable tool, but human connection drives real achievement. Join us monthly as we celebrate coaches who make a meaningful difference.

To kick off 2025, we’re featuring Gregory O'Neill, MCC, NBC-HWC (in training) - one of our talented coaches based in the USA. Discover his insights and stay tuned for next month’s spotlight!

  1. What inspired you to become a coach?

"What intrigued and inspired me to become a coach, was understanding the core belief that the client has all the answers they are searching for within themselves. That, as coaches, we have unconditional positive regard for our clients, meaning coaching advice is not needed, or warranted. Ideas or solutions are created by the client because we believe in them wholeheartedly. As Claire Pedrick writes in her book, Simplifying Coaching, “we (coaches) are thought facilitators, not problem solvers.” I love the idea that our answers lie within, which builds confidence in everyone."

  1. What is your unique coaching style?

"I do not use a one-size-fits-all coaching style. I tailor each coaching session to the client’s stated needs and wants from our time together. I love to co-create a safe space for clients to be as vulnerable as they choose, in a welcoming, disarming, and sometimes humorous approach."

  1. What skills do you bring to the coaching world?

"The skills I bring to coaching include resilience and confidence building, personal development, career coaching, behavioral health coaching, communication enhancement, workplace dynamics improvement, stress management, self-awareness development, emotional intelligence and empathy building, and life balance coaching."

  1. Which topics come up most frequently in your coaching?

"The topics that arise most frequently include, identifying values, career clarity, personal clarity, mindfulness, negative self-talk, self-compassion, behavior and mindset change, confidence, imposter syndrome, and communication."

  1. Which coaching question, model or tool brings the most insight? "I love the question, “What else?” Preceded by a question such as, “What does this tell you, what feelings are arising, or what does your intuition say?” When asked what else does this tell you, what else is arising, or what else is your intuition telling you, it encourages the client to go a little bit deeper than just their surface thoughts, or feelings. “What else” often creates a silence, and silence is often the birthplace of the most informative replies."

  1. What is your favorite motivational quote or mantra? “Know all the theories, master all the techniques, but as you touch a human soul be just another human soul.” – Dr. Carl Jung

  2. What advice would you give someone starting their coaching journey? "I would advise a coaching prospect that the three most important skills for a coach to embody include empathy, curiosity, and presence. These three will help co-create a successful partnership with the client and their desired results."

  1. Can you tell us about your favorite moment throughout your coaching career? "One of my favorite moments of coaching came when I was coaching undergraduate students. I had a young woman begin coaching with low self-confidence in her ability to manage her time and be successful in college. She was a single Mom, with three kids, two pets, a full-time job, and now, school. Working together, we accomplished my client’s goals of improving her negative self-talk, creating the time she needs in the day to be successful scholastically, communicating differently with her family to improve overall efficiency, and become more mindful of her thoughts and energy. This student had so much to overcome, and not only did she overcome, she also felt the ripple effect on her whole family. By the time we were done working together, not only was she an “A” student, but she was talking to herself with compassion, and her three kids were practicing mindfulness with her before dinner each night creating a different atmosphere at home. The work she did in coaching was incredible, and she earned her college degree."

  1. What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned from coaching others?

More than anything, I have learned from coaching others that people are extremely wise and respond really well when they have people who believe them; and believe in them.

  2. What’s your favorite book, podcast, or movie related to personal development? I love The Truman Show starring Jim Carrey. He is on a journey of self-discovery through his questioning of what is true in his world and what is not, what it means to honor authenticity, and the nature of human experience.
